MG SALES supplies fresh Polish apples to importers and distributors in Nigeria on full-container reefer programmes. Request a Nigeria quote ›Why Nigerian importers buy Polish apples from MG SALES
Nigeria is one of West Africa's largest fresh-apple import markets. The local climate does not support apple cultivation, so demand is met almost entirely by imports, and consumption keeps growing with the urban middle class. Polish apples compete well on this route: strong colour, firm flesh, reliable controlled-atmosphere shelf life, and a competitive landed cost when shipped through northern-European ports rather than routed via Spain.
MG SALES works batch by batch. Every container is drawn from CA storage, inspected before loading, and documented with a full export set so the fruit clears Nigerian customs without surprises. We deal directly with the importer – no intermediary consolidator standing between you and the orchard price.
Two routes to Nigeria – direct FCL or consolidated
Direct full-container via Hamburg / Antwerp (preferred)
The core Nigeria programme is a 40ft reefer container of roughly 20–24 tonnes net, trucked a short distance from Poland to Hamburg or Antwerp and shipped directly to Lagos / Apapa or Tin Can Island. Because the inland leg is short and both ports run direct West Africa services, this route is cost-efficient and keeps the full margin with the buyer and MG SALES – not with a third-country consolidator. It also runs year-round, independent of the European apple season windows that constrain other supply chains.
Consolidated / mixed-origin (smaller volumes)
For buyers who cannot fill a full container, apples can also move through European consolidation, where Polish fruit travels alongside other origins. This is the fallback for trial or part-load volumes; the direct Hamburg / Antwerp route remains the better economics for committed full-container programmes.
Apple varieties for the Nigerian market
West African buyers favour firm, well-colouring, long-storing apples. The varieties we ship most often to Nigeria:
- Royal Gala – sweet, crisp, strong red-over-yellow colour; a consistent volume seller.
- Red Delicious – deep red, classic export apple with good transit resilience.
- Golden Delicious – yellow-green, sweet, widely accepted across the region.
- Red Jonaprince – intense red, firm, excellent controlled-atmosphere shelf life for long routes.
Availability depends on season and CA storage stock – contact us for current batch details and calibres.
HS code, documentation and phytosanitary requirements
Fresh apples are classified under HS code 0808.10. A standard MG SALES shipment to Nigeria travels with a commercial invoice, packing list, EU phytosanitary certificate, certificate of origin and bill of lading. MG SALES prepares the export documentation set from the Polish side; the Nigerian importer arranges the local import permit and, where applicable, Form M / PAAR and any NAFDAC / quarantine formalities. Commercial terms are agreed directly – contact us.
Reefer logistics and cold chain to Lagos
The sea route from northern Europe to Lagos is a multi-week transit, so cold-chain discipline decides whether the fruit arrives in sellable condition. Apples load in temperature-controlled reefer containers with set-point and ventilation tuned to the variety, drawn from CA storage so they enter the box with maximum remaining shelf life. Pre-shipment inspection is done batch by batch, and a quality inspection report is available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions — Apple Export to Nigeria
Do you export fresh apples directly to Nigeria?
Yes. MG SALES ships full-container reefer loads of Polish apples to Lagos / Apapa and Tin Can Island, loaded and sailed from Hamburg or Antwerp to keep inland transport short and avoid Spanish consolidation costs.
Which apple varieties suit the Nigerian market?
Royal Gala, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Red Jonaprince – firm, well-colouring, long-storing apples that travel well on the multi-week Lagos route.
What HS code and documents apply?
HS code 0808.10. Shipments travel with commercial invoice, packing list, EU phytosanitary certificate, certificate of origin and bill of lading. MG SALES prepares the export set; the importer arranges the Nigerian import permit.
Why Hamburg / Antwerp instead of a Spanish port?
Both are close to Poland by road and run direct West Africa services, so inland haulage is cheaper and MG SALES sells directly to the importer without a consolidator's margin.
What is the minimum order?
The direct route is built around full 40ft reefer containers (~20–24 t net). Smaller trial volumes can move through consolidation.
